Ladylaura – 2009 Graduate
Academy of Mt. St. Ursula

Many alumnae of the Academy of Mount St. Ursula—New York State's oldest Catholic school for girls--were supported through the years by Inner-City Scholarship Fund's Be A Student's Friend program, which continues to make the gift of a Catholic education a reality for disadvantaged inner-city children. Ladylaura Bueno's example proves how significant the program's contributions can be in young people's lives.

Aside from academic activities, Ladylaura has enjoyed giving back:"She is generous of spirit and dedicates her time to helping others," noted Mount Saint Ursula's Assistant Principal for Academics, Lisa Harrison. Ladylaura spent time tutoring elementary school students in her former school, Saint Elizabeth (an ICSF-supported school in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan.) To add to her credentials, she volunteered for such organizations as ABC Echo Park, which runs summer daycare for toddlers, and the International Rescue Committee, which prepares refugees to attain the English language skills necessary for survival in the United States.

Ladylaura—the first in her family to go to college—will be attending Barnard in the fall and aspires to become a prosecutor. She is very grateful to her Be A Student's Friend sponsors, Mr. Christopher Brent and his late wife, Liane Brent, who made her formative experience at the Academy of Mount Saint Ursula possible. She now looks to new worlds of opportunity at prestigious Barnard College.
