Among the most tragic aspects of families living in poverty is the lack of choices parents have for themselves and their children. We are constantly approached by parents who are unhappy with the kind of education their children are receiving in public schools, but they can't afford to transfer them into Catholic schools. Founded in collaboration with The Partnership for Inner-City Education, and the Children's Scholarship Fund, the Cardinal's Scholarship Program provides low-income families with an alternative to the public school system by providing tuition assistance to students in grades K-8 who wish to transfer from a public school to an inner-city Catholic elementary school of the Archdiocese of New York. The amount of each Cardinal's Scholarship Program scholarship awarded is based on individual families' needs, as well as the tuition of a desired school, but, as with all of ICSF's programs, students and their families are responsible for paying some portion of their tuition. In the four years since it was founded, the Cardinal's Scholarship Program has impacted the lives of thousands of boys and girls in grades K-8 by helping subsidize their tuition up to 75% depending on their need.
